Since Okapi national park is found in Ituri forest, this area is known for the occurrence of several tourism activities of which include;
Game viewing
Democratic Republic of Congo is Africa’s second largest country and her biodiversity is unmatchable. However, the political unrest that has characterized her for decades compromised the conservation efforts leading to heavy loss of wildlife species and revenue from tourism. Congo has a good number of national parks but the most notably here is Okapi national park which has a lot of animals like endemic Bonobos, endemic Okapi and the wild game including the African Big five among others.
Nature walks
Congo does not have very many places where nature walk can take place. So one can go and tour around Lola Ya Bonobo. This is a centre for the orphaned Bonobo monkeys. Located in Kinshasa’s Masina district, Lola Ya Bonobo is a unique place for nature lovers to visit when they head to the DRC. It’s the only sanctuary specifically dedicated to bonobo monkeys in the entire world and guests can see these wonderful primates up close and personal when they pay a visit.
The bonobo monkey itself is critically endangered, and the sanctuary cares for monkeys that have been abandoned or left orphaned by poaching. Proceeds from ticket sales go towards protecting bonobo habitats in other parts of the DRC, so it’s a worthy cause, as well as a leading tourist attraction.
Bird watching
Congo is one of the countries that are endowed with a high number of birds. It has a total number of over 1185 bird species of which 20% are indigenous species and the rest are migratory birds. This country has the greatest avian biodiversity of any African country.
